Lee DeWyze Becomes First American Idol Winner to Have Writing Credit on Debut Single

Lee DeWyze, last year's American Idol winner has grown on me a lot recently.  While I never really DIS-LIKED him per say, Crystal Bowersoxx got my votes just because I liked her voice better.  All things aside, I gotta say that I'm impressed with DeWyze's first album single, "Sweet Serendipity."  The song, which premiered on the On Air With Ryan Seacrest show in mid October, was co-written by DeWyze and produced by David Glass.  A self-taught singer, songwriter and guitarist, DeWyze hails from the Chicago suburbs and counts Ray LaMontagne, Cat Stevens and Kris Kristofferson among his inspirations. Now knowing that DeWyze taught himself how to sing, write music and play guitar is made all the more impressive knowing that he co-wrote all but one of the 11-tracks on the album, including his debut single, making him the first Idol winner to have writing credit on a first single. AMAZING accomplishment.

"To see my name listed in the credits on each song was really important to me because I'm a songwriter," says the 24-year old.  "I also loved working with such talented writers.  They all brought so much to the table and helped me flesh out my sound...I want people to relate to these songs."

Speaking of "talented writers," DeWyze had the chance to collaborate with some of the best in the business right now, including Toby Gad (Alicia Keys, Fergie), John Shanks (Bon Jovi, Sheryl Crow), David Hodges (Kelly Clarkson, Weezer) and the Norwegian production team known as Espionage (Beyonce, Train).  That's a pretty sick lineup for a first timer, just going to show that the Idol machine really does give an artist the tools he or she needs to make a hit record.

The first single, "Sweet Serendipity" really does set a nice tone for the album.  It's up-tempo, it's breezy, cheerful and fun.  The last thing we need is some melodramatic, dramatic rock-ballad.  I also gotta say how happy I am that Idol has ditched that awful songwriting contest. No more sappy, "I can't believe I made it this far," "I'm so lucky" songs.  Leave the songwriting to the professionals.  We don't need 10 versions of "A Moment Like This."  The melody really suits DeWyze's soulful rock rasp perfectly.  The forthcoming album, Live It Up, (November 16th) explores love, regret and passion.

"I love stories in songs and always try to write from an honest place. It's about capturing emotion, so that when you listen, it takes you back to that place. My best memories are all connected to music and I want to create those moments for other people."

While I'm still anxiously awaiting new music from Crystal Bowersoxx, Lee DeWyze's first single has now whetted my appetite for more of that "soulful, rough-edged" voice that America fell in love with earlier this year on American Idol.

Check out the album tracklisting below and download his debut single on iTunes now.

  1. Live It Up
  2. Sweet Serendipity
  3. It’s Gotta Be Love

Hot Video Alert: Olly Murs - Thinking Of Me

Oh Olly Olly Olly. You really can do no wrong in my book. I absolutely LOVED Olly Murs' first single "Please Don't Let Me Go." It was sweet, catchy and the video was absolutely adorable. That song also gave us a good feel for the kind of sound Murs' was going for on his debut album, due out November 29th. Murs' sound is a little bit pop, a little bit R&B, a little bit retro. His voice reminds me very much of Will Young, and while that's not a bad thing, his songs are beginning to sound like Will Young songs. Sure, he's his own artist. The musical style is different but the delivery is very reminiscent of the Pop Idol winner's vocal delivery. No matter.

Second single, "Thinking Of Me" follows suit, in terms of overall feel and sound. Due November 22nd, "Thinking Of Me" was co-written by Murs, Steve Robson and Wayne Hector and co-produced by Robson and Future Cut. What could have made this single better for me is if Professor Green would have made an appearance, as originally planned. Unfortunately that never happened, so Murs is left to fend for himself. The video clip is cute as ever, featuring Olly falling asleep in his Ice Cream truck and daydreaming about pretty girls. These two singles have me hopeful for the album and while I sincerely hope that the ENTIRE album doesn't have this same laid back islandy vibe...I'd love it all the same no matter what.  When it comes to Olly Murs, I'm pretty easy to please.

Hot Video Alert: Willow Smith - Whip My Hair

It should've come as NO SURPRISE when Willow Smith bust out onto the music scene with her single "Whip My Hair," that the 9 year old has talent. I mean look at her parents? Hello! Will Smith + Jada Pinkett-Smith (not to mention older brother Jaden). Of course Willow was going to be talented. It just had to be.  After appearances in I Am Legend and Kit Kittredge: An American Girl, it looked as if Willow would be headed in the same career direction as her parents and older brother. Not so, apparently. Perhaps taking after her father, whose musical career spanned from the mid 80s all the way to 2005, Willow dropped a single. Whatever prompted Willow Smith to record this AMAZING little song, I'm glad she did. It's just so damn catchy! I haven't had hair in 5 years but I'm whippin' it back and forth all the same!

What REALLY makes this song for me is the AMAZING Ray Kay-directed video. One can't help but think about Willow's age while watching/listening to this song. 9 freakin' years old? Sure, the video is a little provocative in that regard. Smith isn't really wearing anything TOO too risque, although she is wearing A LOT of makeup...more makeup than any 9 year old NOT part of the pageant circuit should be wearing. The song features Smith in a futuristic cafeteria of some kind, making an entrance with a CRAZY tall hairpiece and a boom-box filled with paint. She lets her hair down, dips her braids into the paint and THEN the party begins. I'll just tell you this much...she whips her hair back and forth. Cool visuals and impressive choreography NOT to mention a catchy song ALL help make the "Whip My Hair" video an instant classic.

The song was released to radio on October 12th and was made available for downloads on October 26th. "Whip My Hair" debuted on the Billboard Hot 100 at #78, and has peaked so far at #12 on the Billboard Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart. The song was co-written by Smith herself alongside Jukebox, who also served as producer. Smith signed to Jay-Z's Columbia Records imprint, Roc Nation and will be releasing her debut album next year.  Get "Whip My Hair" now on iTunes. This girl is destined to be a star.

Israeli Singer/Songwriter Ivri Lider Nominated for EMA, Set to Release English Language Debut

Ivri Lider is someone I feel like I should already know about. The handsome Israeli singer/songwriter is one of the largest-selling pop/rock artists in his native country, selling over a quarter million records since he first splashed into the spotlight back in 1997. With a recent MTV European Music Award nomination now under his belt (he was nominated for Best Israeli Act) I have a feeling that the rest of the world will soon know his name.

Lider recently completed his first ALL ENGLISH album called Fly/Forget, which was recorded in London town last year and produced by Andy Green, who's worked with the likes of Lou Reed, KT Tunstall and Snow Patrol.

"Fly/Forget brings together the numerous styles that Lider has deftly exhibited in the past, bridging his love of electronic music with warmer, acoustic tracks and classic rootsy pop."

While this may seem like TOO MANY different sounds for one single album, Lider explains "I get a little bored when an album only has one style." He does have a point. For the listener, it's nice to break up the listening experience. Different styles, different tempos...it helps create a nice flow. The openly gay artist uses music as a means to get his point of view across and runs the whole emotional gamut, from love and sorrow to regret and hope. The track "The Man I Love" was featured prominently in the 2006 movie The Bubble, a gay love story between an Israeli and a Palestinian.

"Ivri makes no attempt to disguise who and why some of his songs were made - the longing and love for another man - yet with the beauty, sincerity, simplicity and sheer standard of his music and songwriting skills, the listener quickly forgets about sexual preferences and is reminded of the simple love and longing we all have for others, regardless of gender, age or creed."

I'm intrigued by the 36 year old singer/songwriter and it seems like the rest of the world is becoming intrigued as well. Lider recently appeared at CMJ, performing a couple of showcases, including the High Rise/PopJustice showcase with Natalia Kills. Check out the music videos for "The Man I Love" and "Jesse" below.  I expect big things from Lider.  What a talent.  This guy is definitely someone to have on your radar in the months to come.

Hot Video Alert: Rihanna - Only Girl (In The World)

Wow. Guess I missed the boat THIS one too. I did show you all the teaser for Rihanna's "Only Girl (In The World)" video earlier this month but that was it. Well here it is. It's a party in the desert (or on Mars...not sure) and not a trashy Ke$ha desert party. This is a classy desert party, complete with flowers, balloons, fireworks, swings, trampolines, weird dress-lights hanging from trees. Sounds like a party I definitely want to at, especially if this song is playing. This song is VERY dance move-worthy. If I were a fist pumping guy, I would definitely start fist pumping when this songs comes on. LOVE. The video, which features Rihanna and NO ONE else was directed by Anthony Mandler.

"Only Girl (In The World)" was produced by Stargate and Sandy Vee and is out now on iTunes in the U.S. The track peaked at #3 on the Billboard Hot 100 and has yet to chart in the UK, despite being released on October 25th. I'm a little bit surprised, actually, that the song didn't do better in Britain. (OK so I'm an idiot. It's Sunday and the UK charts had yet to be released. The song debuted at #2 on the charts. That's more like it!)."Only Girl (In The World)" went #1 in Australia, Austria, Belgium, Canada, France, New Zealand, and Norway. Club remixes come to us from Bimbo Jones, Rosabel, Mixin Mark & Tony Svejda and CCW, leading to a #9 peak on the Billboard Hot Dance Club Play chart. The second single released from her forthcoming fifth studio album, Loud (November 10), has been announced as "What's My Name," featuring Canadian rapper Drake. The single impacted U.S. radio on October 26th and is officially available to download in Australia. It'll be out for download in the States on November 1st. In the meantime, check out my buddy The Prophet's blog to see Ri Ri perform her two singles last night on Saturday Night Live.  Just a warning...the performances are a bit rough.

Katie Melua Reveals 'To Kill You With A Kiss' Artwork, Single Due November 29th

Katie Melua is BACK on track, promoting her AMAZING fourth studio album The House and releasing a third single, "To Kill You With A Kiss." Now...I'm not 100% sure what this song is. There isn't a song on the official tracklisting called "To Kill You With A Kiss."  Now, there is a Guy Chambers/Katie Melua penned track called "I'd Love To Kill You" which features the lyric "I'd love to kill you with a kiss." If THAT's the song we're talking about then YES. I'm excited.  It calls to mind a lot of the Mike Batt-produced material from her previous three records in that it's a bit dreamy.  Seeing that it's a William Orbit production, the song is one of the least William Orbit-sounding productions on the album and I don't think that's a bad thing at all. It's got a haunting melody and beautiful lyrics. It's really a quintessential Katie Melua piece and a great one to come back with, seeing that her last single came out in July.  Whatever the case may be with the song title, I'm just happy to see Katie back with a new single.  Not only has she been absent from the airwaves, Melua had to postpone her tour due to exhaustion.  Poor thing! She's since rescheduled her European tour dates, which you can find on her official site. Hopefully some U.S. dates are in the works as well, as I'd LOVE to see her again.

"I'd Love To Kill You" was produced by William Orbit like the rest of her album and is one of my favorite Katie Melua albums to date.   The new single is due out November 29th via Dramatico. I would assume that we'll get some remixes, as we did with "The Flood" and "A Happy Place." Check out the fantastic cover art above. Katie looks ABSOLUTELY gorgeous.

'Burlesque' Soundtrack To Feature New Music From Cher and Christina Aguilera

I haven't been THIS excited for a film soundtrack since Glitter back in September of 2001. OK. That's DEFINITELY an exaggeration but I have to say...I'm pretty excited for this one. Hello!? Cher + Christina Aguilera on one soundtrack? AMAZINGNESS. While there doesn't appear to be any duets on the album the 10-tracks seem to give both stars a chance to shine.
On November 22nd, RCA Records is set to release Burlesque, the soundtrack to the film starring Cher and Christina.

Not only does Aguilera star in the film but she also co-wrote many of the songs featured on the soundtrack. The album reads more like a slick pop production rather than a film soundtrack, featuring production from Tricky Stewart, Linda Perry and Ron Fair and additional songwriting by Claude Kelly, Tricky Stewart and Sia. Cher will be singing two brand new tracks including the Diane Warren-penned ballad "You Haven't Seen The Last of Me," produced by Matt Serletic. This will be Cher's first new music in seven years so it's kind of a BIG DEAL! In addition to the original tracks the album includes a string of covers of classics like "Something's Got A Hold On Me" (Etta James) and "A Guy What Takes His Time" (Mae West).

Burlesque the film was written and directed by Steven Antin and produced by Donald De Line. Released by Screen Gems/Sony Pictures, the movie is out November 24th nationwide. Check out the tracklisting below and the album artwork up top.

Tracklisting:
1 Something’s Got A Hold On Me (performed by Christina Aguilera)
2 Welcome To Burlesque (performed by Cher)
3 Tough Lover (performed by Christina Aguilera)
4 But I Am A Good Girl (performed by Christina Aguilera)
5 Guy What Takes His Time (performed by Christina Aguilera)
6 Express (performed by Christina Aguilera)
7 You Haven’t Seen The Last Of Me (performed by Cher)
8 Bound To You (performed by Christina Aguilera)
9 Show Me How You Burlesque (performed by Christina Aguilera)
10 The Beautiful People (from Burlesque) (performed by Christina Aguilera)

Hot Video Alert: Brandon Flowers - Only The Young

I had really hoped that Brandon Flowers' debut solo effort would have made more of an impact on the charts but that doesn't appear to be the case. Flowers' album had all the makings of a hit record...a sound similar to The Killers. Stuart Price serving as producer. Sounds like a pop masterpiece to me. While the album had a reasonably strong debut at #8 on the Billboard 200 chart and taking the #1 spot on the UK album chart. Debut single, "Crossfire" managed to take the #6 spot on the Billboard Alternative chart and #11 on the Billboard Rock chart, not to mention #8 on the UK Singles chart. Follow up single (which is not "Swallow It," I guess) "Only The Young" was released in the States on October 16th and will be out in the UK on November 29th. The BEAUTIFUL Sophie Muller-directed video was filmed at Le Reve at Wynn Las Vegas. Muller previously directed Flowers' in the video for "Mr. Brightside" alongside of his Killers cohorts. Check out the stunning video below.

"Lights Out" for Cherish...Fallon and Felisha Ready for Their The Spotlight

Well, I guess I can't ever take another vacation from blogging again. Miss a day...miss a lot. I'm just now discovering this HOT dance single from Fallon and Felisha (AKA F+F), twin sisters better known when they were part of U.S. R&B group Cherish. Newly split from the group, the girls are back and badder than ever in "Lights Out," an up-tempo, real club banger of a track. The high-energy "Lights Out" is all about being young, fun and feeling alive.

Starting out as a sister act, Fallon and Felisha joined their older sisters Farrah and Neosha, forming the group Cherish.  After releasing a debut album Unappreciated (which went gold), debuting at #4 on the Billboard 200 chart, their hit single "Do It To It" peaked at #12 on the Billboard Hot 100 with the video receiving over 5 million views on YouTube. While subsequent singles failed to do as well the girls' released a second studio album, The Truth in May of 2008. Now, officially split from the group and on their own, Fallon and Felisha are thinking outside of the R&B box which they've been stuck in for the past few years and moving into electro dance territory (a la Wynter Gordon) A very wise move, if you ask me.  Check out their debut single "Lights Out" below and download it now on iTunes if you like what you hear.

Hot Video Alert: Christian TV - When She Turns 18

"Who the f**k is Christian TV?" A very good question and a clever SUBJECT LINE for a press release. Of course I'm going to investigate. Now...while I may be asking this question a few months too late, there's no time like the present, right?

Christian TV (AKA Christian Berishaj) is part of a band signed by Atlantic Records, called Love Arcade. The five-member band got it's start in Michigan and ultimately signed to Atlantic, whereunder they released their debut album in the summer of 2006. While songs surfaced from the band's sophomore effort, an album was never released.  Now...Mr. Christian has gone solo and from the sounds of it, that was a good decision. While I'm not familiar with Love Arcade, I am LOVING "When She Turns 18," the debut solo single from Christian TV. To me it sounds fresh, fun and radio friendly...a future electro-rock smash in line with Mike Posner, Ed Drewett and other similar artists out right now.

Now signed to Universal Motown in the States and Mercury Records in the UK, Christian TV prepares to release his solo debut. Working with the likes of Benny Benassi, Quinn Allman (guitarist with The Used) and Luke Walker (The Deftones, Tyga, Leighton Meester), the album is called Mr. Berishaj's Diary of an 80s Baby and should be out late 2010 or early 2011. At only 24 years old, Christian TV wears a lot of hats - singer, songwriter, producer, remixer. Very impressive indeed! What's more, Christian TV has a fan in Britney Spears, who tweeted a link proclaiming her love for the (original) video. U.S. iTunes fan can download his EP for "When She Turns 18" featuring a remix by LA Riots (listen HERE).  Christian TV recently supported Pete Wentz's new outfit Black Cards in the UK.  I expect to hear lots more from this talented guy in the months to come.

Hot Video Alert: Fefe Dobson - Stuttering

It looks like we're ONE STEP closer to a new Fefe Dobson album...FINALLY! Dobson's third album...err...second album to see the light of day...Joy, will be released in Canada on November 22nd and on November 30th in the States via 21 Music, a division of Island Records. "Stuttering" is the infectious new single from the Canadian singer/songwriter who hasn't sounded THIS pop since...well...since her last single, the Kevin Rudolf-produced "Ghost." But before that, it seemed as if Dobson was going in a less pop, more rock direction but with "Stuttering," all of my concerns are obliterated.

Dobson's debut album had an obvious ROCK edge.  Then came the brilliance that was "Don't Go (Girls and Boys)"...a fun little dance/pop number that was completely different than anything Dobson had released previously. Then came the singles from the never released Sunday Love and it was back to that ROCK sound.  Now we have Joy.  The first two singles...were different...but similar to her old sound.  A little bit pop...a little bit rock.  Don't get me wrong, I do love a good shouty rock & roll number like "Watch Me Move" but once "Ghost" came out I was smitten with Fefe Dobson, electro pop diva.  While "Stuttering" isn't electro pop by any means, it's something different for the 25 year old. Dobson can really wail and she does in her new single. It sounds like something Rihanna or Shontelle might put out right now.  A little bit of pop mixed with a little bit of R&B. How contemporary of Ms. Dobson! Now that she's back on Island Records (after being dropped and then picked back up), here's hoping she gets the promotion she deserves.

The video starts out like your typical "jealous ex" video with Dobson hanging around a sleazy motel, waiting to confront her cheating boyfriend.  But OH NO.  This time...there's a twist.  I won't give it away but you can check it out below.  "Stuttering" is out now on U.S. iTunes. Get it.  Also make sure that you check out Dobson on the CW series Hellcats, November 10th, performing as herself.

Hot Video Alert: Nicole Scherzinger - Poison

Poor Nicole Scherzinger hasn't yet been able to find her niche as a solo artist. Hopefully (for her sake), the new RedOne-produced single "Poison" will break that curse and earn this talented singer a spot at the top of the charts. While I'm happy that the other Dolls are free from PCD, Nicole was the front woman for a reason. She's got a POWERFUL voice...whether you love it or you hate it. It's undeniable. "Poison" is out in the UK on November 28th and features an impressive lineup of club remixes from Dave Audé, Cahill, Manufacturered Superstars and Guy Furious. The Joseph Khan-directed video is VERY Gattaca meets Batman in it's look and feel - sort of futuristic retro. I love it. Nicole kicks ass as some kind of FIERCE & FABULOUS super heroine.

The up-tempo club feel of the single really works for Scherzinger and while I think there's a place for the more pop/R&B sound that she attempted with the as-yet unreleased Her Name Is Nicole project (see "Whatever U Like," and "Baby Love") this seems like a wiser choice for a breakout single...especially in the UK. Say what you want about mega producer RedOne but I think that his influence on Nicole here makes for some electro-pop deliciousness. More please!

Hot Video Alert: Robyn - Indestructible

Swedish pop pixie Robyn releases the third and final part of her Body Talk trilogy on November 22nd in the states (November 29th in the UK) on Cherrytree Records. Single #1, "Indestructible" is another slice of synthpop heaven from Robyn, further proving that Robyn can indeed do no wrong. Her past two singles off of Body Talk Parts 1 and 2 have been GORGEOUS electro pop stunners (see "Dancing On My Own" and "Hang With Me") so the fact that this Klas Ã…hlund-produced masterpiece is just as good shouldn't be a surprise to anyone. The single is out in the UK on November 22nd and is backed by Laidback Luke, The Krays, Laserkraft and Steve Pitron & Max Sanna on the official remix. The sexually charged video (directed by Nils Ljunggren and Max Vitali) features scenes of a couple (and a threesome) going at it, interspersed with shots of a naturally gorgeous Robyn wearing a cool "water jacket" (designed by Lucy McRae) with different colored waters flowing through. Very cool look.

Body Talk will feature 5 songs apiece from Body Talk Parts 1 and Part 2 as well as 5 new songs. EPIC! Check out the album's tracklisting below and watch the hot new video.

1. Fembot
2. Don't Fucking Tell Me What to Do
3. Dancing on My Own
4. Indestructible
5. Time Machine
6. Love Kills
7. Hang with Me
8. Call Your Girlfriend
9. None of Dem (featuring Röyksopp)
10. We Dance to the Beat
11. U Should Know Better (featuring Snoop Dogg)

Hot Video Alert: Kylie Minogue - Get Outta My Way (Live on 'The Tonight Show')

Celebrating her second consecutive #1 Billboard Club hit off of Aphrodite, "Get Outta My Way" Kylie Minogue DAZZLED American television audiences twice last week. First, with an appearance on Dancing With The Stars and finally on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno. See! THIS is why I love Kylie Minogue. Unlike a lot of dance pop artists out there, the pint size pop princess can really sing. This really became clear to me after seeing her live last year in Chicago on her first ever North American tour. While her DWTS performance was more in line with what we've seen before on some of her European TV appearances, on The Tonight Show, Ms. Minogue showed us a different side. Minogue performed her new single backed by Ricky Minor and his band. Vocally-speaking, I think Minogue sounded a bit stronger on DWTS but she does alright on Leno, having a ball the whole entire time. When Kylie's having fun, you can see it on her face. Her joy just bubbles over. As if two TV appearances weren't enough. Minogue will also grace us with her presence on the November 7th episode of Extreme Makeover: Home Edition. "Get Outta My Way" impacts mainstream radio on November 1st.

On the tour front, Kylie will launch her "Aphrodite - Les Folies 2011" world tour in Denmark on February 19th. I'm eagerly awaiting news on Kylie's US tour dates, which should be next Spring. Please come to Boston this time Kylie. Love Jamie.

Hot Video Alert: Alexandra Burke - The Silence

Originally due to be released as a previous single, Alexandra Burke is finally releasing her emotional power ballad "The Silence" on November 29th in the UK. The video, shot in beautiful black & white, features a gorgeous Burke dressed in gorgeous gowns, standing in front of a wall of black tiles. As far as ballads go, this is one of the better ones in my opinion. I don't know what it is about ballads that usually put me to sleep but this one is jam packed with big notes and big drama. The stunningly simple video is a nice complement to the song. The single is out a week before the release of a special deluxe version of Burke's debut album, Overcome (see cover art above). "The Silence" will be the fifth single to be released from the album and the follow up to Burke's last #1 "Start Without You." While there's no word yet about any new mixes, "The Silence" was previously remixed by the almighty Almighty (listen HERE). While I wish her the best on release day, Burke's got some stiff competition, with singles also out by Alesha Dixon, Nicole Scherzinger, Robyn, Shakira and Taio Cruz. Yikes. Good luck girl!

Hot Video Alert: Alesha Dixon - Radio

Former Mis-Teeq member Alesha Dixon is back with the second single off her forthcoming third studio album, The Entertainer, called "Radio." "Radio" is going to be released in the UK on November 28th, followed the next day by the album's release.  The single will be backed with remixes by 7th Heaven (listen HERE), True Tiger (listen HERE), Mutated Forms (listen HERE) and a new pop edit featuring Wiley on a guest verse (listen HERE). BRILLIANT!  The single is a decent enough electro-pop-ballad, "Radio" really allows Dixon to showcase her pipes (which honestly, I didn't really know she had). Sure, she's released ballads before but I guess I just paid them no mind. This song isn't anything new but paired up with a dark video about domestic abuse, you've got yourself something interesting...provocative even. As a follow up to the rather cluttered hot mess that was "Drummer Boy" (emphasis on the "HOT"...not the "MESS" - I DID like the song eventually) "Radio" is a pleasant treat for the ears. Pretty song. Well done, Alesha.

Hot Video Alert: Katy Perry - Firework

Apparently...all it took for me to start liking Katy Perry's new single was seeing her bosoms exploding with FIREWORKS. Like some kind of X-Men with a busted super power, Katy Perry spreads "good vibes" all over the place in the form of smiles and yes...FIREWORKS. "Firework" is the third single off of Perry's sophomore album Teenage Dream and was produced by Stargate and Sandy Vee. Like with nearly all of Perry's past releases, critical reaction of the single (and the video) has been mixed. To date, her live performances of the single, both on Letterman and on X-Factor, proved to be a little shaky.  Then again...most of her live performances prove to be shaky so I don't think that's really news.

While the individual scenarios that play out in the Dave Meyers-directed video are a bit cliche, it definitely sends a powerful message.  The fireworks that appear throughout the video, emerging from within seem to represent a sense of confidence and self worth, a message that's especially timely right now given what's in the news of late with regards to bullying and gay suicides.  Very cool.  The song is definitely growing on me.  "Firework" was released  on October 26th in the States and is due out in the UK on November 15th.  Remixes so far have surfaced from UK remix outfit Wideboys.  More to follow I hope!

Dolly Rockers Announce U.S. Label Deal, Take New York City By Storm

I've been eagerly anticipating news from the Dolly Rockers' camp since August when the girls announced signing a U.S. record deal.  Recently, it was announced that the girls joined up with mega producer RedOne and former president of Epic Records, Charlie Walk in a new venture called with RedWalk Productions (according to the girls' Twitter profile). BRILLIANT news.

As if news could get any better...earlier this month the Dolly's posted a video from a recent week-long New York City excursion where they mixed both business and pleasure AND in typical Dolly Rocker fashion...filmed the whole thing.  While the whole video is indeed very amusing, my FAVORITE bit comes in just over a minute in where we see the girls writing music and singing through some new material.  With Danielle Owen at the the piano and Lucie Kay and Sophie King huddled around - they rip through a beautiful piano ballad of some kind.  Why is this bit my favorite? Well...aside from getting to hear some new material, I'm actually BLOWN away by their vocals.  The harmonies are killer! I'm so impressed.  Sorry girls, but as fun as "Je Suis Une Dolly" and "Gold Digger" were, they didn't showcase your talent.  I was excited for the Dolly Rockers' debut record before but after hearing the pop trio nail those harmonies, my excitement has been taken to a new level.  I've most DEFINITELY been Dolly Rockered.  Check out the video romp through NYC below.

The Ting Tings Smell Up a New Song and Collaboration, New Album Due in January

You have NO idea how excited I am to hear new material from Jules De Martino and Katie White...AKA The Ting Tings! Their 2008 debut album, We Started Nothing was one of my most listened to albums when it first came out here in the U.S. in June. Nearly EVERY single track on the album was singleworthy (in my book) and 6/10 were actually singles. Fancy that. New single, "Hands," which came out in the UK on October 11th was written by the Tings themselves and mixed by the uber-talented Calvin Harris, debuting at #29 on the UK charts. If you haven't yet caught the Warren Fu-directed video (which premiered on September 5th) check that out HERE. Additionally, look out for an impressive remix package from Wideboys, Ralphi Rosario, Michael Woods and Mixin Marc.

"Hands" is the first single released off of the bands' sophomore effort, which is due out sometime in January 2011. While we're waiting for the new album to drop, check out a new track called "We're Not The Same" and scope out the cool behind-the-scenes footage of The Ting Tings.

Turns out that the video and song are being used in a new promotional campaign for a new Tommy Hilfiger scent called LOUD. To celebrate the new fragrance, you can go and download the full version of "We're Not The Same" HERE. The track was written and produced with the scent in mind.  The perfumers Aurelian Guichard and Yann Vasnier describe LOUD for her as "fragile, explosive and tormented." LOUD is available for both him and her.
This whole campaign seems like BRILLIANT marketing to me, especially for a band that's getting ready to release a new record. Considering the band broke after "Shut Up and Let Me Go" appeared in an Apple commercial, this relationship with Tommy Hilfiger makes sense. According to the press release:
"The music platform for LOUD is what connects youth. It transcends culture, geography and background. Music is the common language they speak. The scents themselves, the bold rock and roll rose and the deep, sensuous patchouli, were created to build over time, like a song that has a great hook. Everything about the project connects to the music elements and the relationship with The Ting Tings truly represents the spirit and energy of LOUD."
In addition to having the band perform at the scent's official launch in Berlin a couple of weeks ago, Tommy.com also unveiled LOUD Radio..."the first digital radio with HD sound dedicated to a fragrance and the spirit of creative collaboration." Um. Amazing! The station plays artsits selected "because their DNA is simiar to Tommy's brand." Sounds like Tommy knows what he's doing here and I like what I smell. Now...bring on the new Ting Tings album please!

Hot Video Alert: Darin - Lovekiller

Remember a couple of months ago when I posted about Swedish pop star Darin? No? Well here's a refresher. The 23 year old singer/songwriter first rose to fame in his native country back in 2004 when he appeared on the first season of Idol - Sweden's version of American Idol.

Back in August, Darin released Lovekiller, his 5th studio album, his 4th #1 record and his first album with Universal Music. The album's title track and 4th single peaked at #6 on the Swedish Chart and up until now has gone without a music video. Well folks...the wait was worth it. The video for "Lovekiller" has finally premiered and it's epic. The video starts out with a crime scene. Darin is lying dead in a park, surrounded by police cars, police and crime scene investigators. Darin opens his eyes and starts singing. Amazing! And it just gets better.  The video really plays like a movie.
Unlike Diana Vickers' "The Boy Who Murdered Love," Darin's "Lovekiller" takes this analogy to a much darker, bloodier place. No cartoon arrows through hearts in this video, just plenty of blood and gore. According to Pop In Stereo, the video for "Lovekiller" is Darin's priciest video to date. Perhaps THAT'S why it's the first single off of the album to get a music video? Also worth a look, here are some some cool photos taken during the video's shoot this past August. Also worth a listen...this dance remix by Steffwell. "Lovekiller" was written and produced by Darin and Tony Nilsson. Check out the video below. Just in time for Halloween!

Hot Video Alert: Katharine McPhee - Say Goodbye

Katharine McPhee's most recent album Unbroken is most definitely one of my favorite albums recorded by a past American Idol contestant.  In fact, I think it's pretty safe to say that McPhee is one of my favorite singers to graduate from the Fox reality series. While her first album was a big, fat flop - both commercially and critically, she more than made up for those Top 40 missteps when recording her Adult Contemporary sophomore follow up.  Turns out that Verve was the right place for her all along.  When she left the Sony Family and joined up with Verve I KNEW good things were on the horizon...and after watching her newest music video for "Say Goodbye," it looks like I was right!

An emotionally charged ballad, "Say Goodbye" has a lot of sentimental meaning for me, especially around this time of year.  The one year anniversary of my mother's passing is fast approaching and "Say Goodbye" was a song that helped get me through everything.  I listened to it on repeat last winter and while it's clear from watching the video (beautifully directed by Judson Pearce Morgan and starring House actor Jesse Spencer) that it's about suicide, I think the lyrics can be applied to any sort of loss.  The very poignant video features a newly Brunette McPhee looking all sad and lonely as she remembers her lost love played by Jesse Spencer.

Also worth mentioning, Katharine McPhee recently put out her first holiday album, titled Christmas Is the Time to Say I Love You.  The album bowed in #11 on the Billboard Top Holiday Albums Chart, selling over 1,000 copies in its first week.  Pick it up today if you're feeling festive.  In the meantime, check out the sweet, sad video for "Say Goodbye" below:

Girlicious Attempt to Pick Up The Pieces with New Album

From classy to trashy. I cover it all here on Music Is My King Size Bed. Being the reality TV junkie that I am, I've been following super slutty girl group Girlicious (made up of Nichole Cordova, Natalie Mejia and Chrystina Sayers) since their sordid days on that low-rated, critically panned music competition on the WB/CW... The Pussycat Dolls Present: Girlicious. Since 2008 they've had a moderately successful career in Canada but have yet to release anything more than a digital EP and a song taken off of the Jersey Shore soundtrack ("Drank").

The girls' saucy, not-so-sophisticated debut self-titled album peaked at #2 on the Canadian album charts and produced two Top 20 tracks ("Like Me," "Stupid Shit"). The first official single, "Like Me" peaked at #4 in Canada while low-grade B-Side "Stupid Shit" managed to scrape in a #20. Third single "Baby Doll" only managed to make it to #55. After the departure of original member Tiffanie Anderson, a label switch (from Geffen to Universal Music Canada) the girls began work on their sophomore effort, releasing "Over You," "Maniac" and "2 In The Morning." The latter, released at the end of August, made it all the way up to #38 and stalled. I honestly don't understand where these girls are going wrong. Granted, there's nothing GROUNDBREAKINGLY original about their sound (they were formed by Pussycat Dolls/Paradiso Girls founder Robin Antin) but their singles have all been moderately catchy. I am liking their more electro-pop sound (versus the urban pop sound of their debut) but I guess it's not making much of an impact North of the border.

Rebuilt, the girls' sophomore effort, is due for release on November 22nd in Canada and is currently available for Pre-Order on the official Girlicious website. The CD also features the album's tracklisting:
Face The Light
Maniac
Grinding
2 in the Morning
Unlearn Me
Wake Up
Sorry Mama
What My Mama Don’t Know
Over You
Hate Love
Noticeably absent from the album? "Drank" - their addition to the Jersey Shore soundtrack. How disappointing! The light at the end of the tunnel for me is that there are remixes coming out soon for second single, "Maniac." Check out the CCW Radio edit here, originally Tweeted by Sayers. If this album doesn't do it for the girls, nothing probably will. The girls Facebooked/Tweeted recently:
"Girlicious is stronger than ever and here to stay! R new record, tour announcement & much more coming! We luv R fans! Werk!"
I hope this all means good things for the girls. I'd love nothing more than to see them succeed. I'm just keepin' it real.

Hot Video Alert: Lauren Pritchard - Not The Drinking (Live on The Tonight Show)

One of my favorite new artists, Lauren Pritchard, took a break from her UK promotional schedule to make her U.S. television debut on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno last night. The 22 year old Jackson, Tennessee native sang a gritty, soulful rendition of her new single, "Not The Drinking," earning herself a raucous round of applause and cheering at the end of the performance. The Broadway Star (Pritchard was part of the original Spring Awakening cast)-turned singer/songwriter was signed to Universal/Island Records and has been busy making a name for herself in the UK, extensively promoting her EP (The Jackson Sessions) and new album, Wasted In Jackson, which was released in the UK on Monday and here in the States Tuesday. UK fans can snag a free copy of the album track "When The Night Kills The Day," co-written by Ed Harcourt and produced by Ted and Marcus Mumford (of Mumford & Sons) on iTunes. U.S. fans can buy the track along with the rest of the album now. If you haven't heard this girl sing, you're really missing out. Love her! Come back to the states Lauren! I'd love to catch you on tour.

Hot Video Alert: Duffy - Well, Well, Well

Oh Duffy, Duffy, Duffy. Where have you been all of my life? Back in 2008, Duffy was just one of a rather large crop of British artists who crossed over to this side of the pond and found moderate success. NOW, her forthcoming sophomore effort is one of my most anticipated albums of the year. Due out November 29th in the UK and December 7th here in the U.S., Endlessly marks Duffy's triumphant return to the scene after a couple of years out of the spotlight. First single "Well, Well, Well" is a smokin' hot soulful little number that recalls elements of Duffy's last major hit, "Mercy." My fear with her new album is that it's going to follow the same format as Rockferry. One romper, stomper of a first single, followed by a string of sleepy ballads. While I do have high hopes for this album, I choose to remain cautiously optimistic...at least until I hear more album clips. Check out the Chris Cottam-directed video below. "Well, Well, Well" was written by Duffy and Albert Hammond and is available now on iTunes via A&M Records.

Hot Interview Alert: Eliza Doolittle

As UK-based singer/songwriter Eliza Doolittle prepares to release her debut self-titled album here in America early next year, she took some time out of her busy schedule to answer a few of my questions. Doolittle, who's already released 3 singles in the UK ("Skinny Genes," "Pack Up" and "Rollerblades") is ready to take the U.S. by storm in 2011 and I for one, am ready to see her "DOO" her thang live.

Doolittle, who's debut album peaked at #3 in the UK, is set to release her quirky pop album in America in early 2011 via Capitol Records and is ALREADY getting attention. Nylon magazine did a little write up on the singer in its September issue, calling out her "sassy lyrics, jaunty melodies," and praising the "happy and carefree" vibe of her sound. While she does serve as co-writer on all 13 of the album's tracks, Doolittle's label managed to wrangle in the big names to assist on her debut - names like Greg Kurstin, Steve Chrisanthou, Jonny $ and Craigie Dodds. Big deal! While the big names are impressive, Doolittle probably could have wrote the whole thing herself, especially given the fact that she's been writing since 12 and actually signed a publishing deal by 16. Impressive! A little bit retro. A lot cool, Doolittle's laid back, summery style will be the perfect winter warmer next year.

Counted among her inspirations we have The Beach Boys, The Kinks, and Stevie Wonder, but she doesn't necessarily see herself fitting within one specific genre of music. "I'd like to be a pop musician in the proper old school vein of pop when there weren't any different genres like there are now; it was all just pop music." According to Doolittle, her music crosses many genres...folk, ska, vintage R&B/Soul and Big Band sounds. Sounds like a show I want to be at! Doolittle's songs' "Skinny Genes" and "Pack Up" are both available to download now on the U.S. iTunes store. Her third UK single "Rollerblades is out now in the UK. More information on her U.S. debut to come shortly. In the meantime, check out my interview below the cut.

(P.S. - How cute is she? She spelled "Do" like "Doo"...because her name is "Doolittle"...get it?)
Hi Eliza! Congrats on all of your success in Europe. 2010 has been a pretty big year for you so far! Your debut album went Top 5; your single "Pack Up" has been certified silver in the UK and now you're releasing your first record in America. Are you feeling any pressure right now or are you just having fun with it?
I am having an amazing amount of fun with it! I try not to let any pressure fall my way cos I can only doo my best and hope people enjoy it as much as I doo!
You recently flew to New York City to film the video for your third UK single "Rollerblades." How was that experience? Are you excited about coming back and promoting your album here next year?
I am very excited! It's always been one of my dreams to doo the American Road Trip tour! Get a big bus and doo it properly!
Speaking of gigs, you're set to open up for another one of my favorite imports, Paloma Faith on her upcoming UK tour next month. How did that all come about? I've heard Paloma puts on quite a show!
We had meet a few times and when the option came up for me to support Paloma I'm very glad she said yes cos we've bumped into each other much more since then and I can tell we're gonna have a great time!
What can audiences expect coming to one of your shows? Do you like to ad lib and play around with song arrangements or do you pretty much play the songs as written?
Well, I surely sing my heart out! I doo stick to the song structures though, it's always nice to change things up a little bit live to give it a different perspective live but it's important to give your listeners what they know and would like to hear. Sticking to the script isn't as hard as it seems, especially when you enjoy what you're reading!
Let's briefly talk about "Pack Up." Whose idea was it to use an old World War I marching song ("Pack Up Your Troubles In Your Old Kit-Bag") as the chorus? Is there a particular era in music that you find especially inspiring?
We just used the lyric so it wasn't the actual song, I got my friend Lloyd Wade to sing it! Everyone thinks it's a sample but it isn't. I think the war time song does relate well to my song now as well because there is always something horrible going on out there in the world and it's important to keep cheerful if you can and the majority of us have very lucky lives so it's really important to remember that.
What are your thoughts on dance music? I see that "Pack Up" was remixed for the clubs by the likes of Riva Starr, The Royal Palms and Analog People In A Digital World. That's a pretty ace line up if you ask me! Is there a genre of music that you love that fans might find surprising?
I doo like dance music, I was actually really into old school garage when I was growing up!
So aside from touring with Paloma this Fall, what does the rest of 2010 have in store for Eliza Doolittle?
Well, I am also dooing my own headline tour which has been amazing as I didn't expect things to go so well and wouldn't have thought I'd be dooing my own headline tour for months! I'm going to be heading out to LA to introduce the US a little bit more of the Doolittle. And then I'm also going to be dooing some shows in Australia before the year is out!
Thank you for taking the time to answer my questions! I'm a big fan of yours here in the States and on my blog. Wishing you continued success and hopefully I'll see you on the road next year!
Thank you for having me ! X
