Kimberley Locke Sets Her Sights on Another No. 1 Dance Single with 'Strobelight'

Looks like all of those #1 Billboard Dance Hits finally did the trick. Kimberley Locke is finally releasing a dance record!  After topping the dance charts with the remixes for "Fall," "Change" and "Band Of Gold," Kimberley Locke is releasing a song that has me dancing even BEFORE the remixes are released.  "Strobelight," produced by Cutfather and Paparazzi is pure disco-pop perfection.  I've always loved Locke's sound...despite note watching American Idol during her season.  While R&B isn't always my cup of tea, you can't help but stop and notice talent when you hear it, and Locke's got talent!  "8th World Wonder" is still one of my jams!  Whatever Randy Jackson did to help make this possible - Randy, Dawg...I thank you!

Now that we've heard the first single, I'm intrigued to hear what the rest of the album is going to sound like?  Is it all going to be up-tempo or is THIS going to be the one club track on the record?  I'm all for a bit of variety, but Kimberley! This is what I want to hear!  Locke is already out promoting the record, hitting up Miami last week at the Winter Music Conference and says via her MySpace Blog that some media and TV appearances are being finalized.  It appears that Locke has her sights set on conquering the Billboard Dance Chart for a fourth time with her new single.  According to Locke via Twitter, remixes are in the works including a remix by the incomparable Tony Moran. EEEEE! I wonder who else is on the remix?

@Fool_4_Music @kimberleylocke Glad you're doing a dance single. Surely we'll get some remixes right? Remixers <3 YOU!

@kimberleylocke @Fool_4_Music Yes, we are hard at work getting the remixes back and ready to go :)

@Fool_4_Music @kimberleylocke sooo excited. Must have it on my iPod STAT!

@kimberleylocke @Fool_4_Music Less than a week!!! Just wait until you hear the Tony Moran remix!!!

"Strobelight" is out digitally next Tuesday, April 6th.  Get it on iTunes folks! In the meantime check out Kimberley Locke's American Idol blog on US Magazine online!

Before Kelis...My Whole Life Was Acapella

Acapella

Kelis | MySpace Music Videos

I LOVE Kelis. The video for her new David Guetta-produced single "Acapella" officially premiered on Monday and it's a stunner. I LOVE all of the tribal influences and Kelis looks absolutely fabulous throughout.

"Acapella" is the first single off of Kelis' forthcoming 5th studio album (her first with Interscope Records). Flesh Tone is due out May 17th in the UK and sometime in June in the U.S. The single was co-written by Kelis, Makeba Riddick and Jean Baptiste and features remixes by Dave Audé, David Guetta and Bimbo Jones. It's available on iTunes now in the U.S. and will be released April 26th in the UK. For Flesh Tone, in addition to David Guetta, Kelis roped in talent like Benny Benassi, Diplo, Boyz Noize, Switch and will.i.am. Now THAT's a solid club record right there. Lookout for Kelis performing "Acapella" on "Jimmy Kimmel Live" on April 6th.

I have high hopes for this single and album. I've been following Kelis since her Kaleidoscope days and really think she's a force to be reckoned with in the industry. I really thought she shined on the Richard X collaboration "Finest Dreams" and other such dabs in electronic music. While I definitely appreciated her R&B/Hip-Hop leanings, that's not where I normally gravitate (although Tasty is undoubtedly one of her best albums to date).

Flesh Tone seems like the logical NEXT STEP after Kelis Was Here failed to impact the charts (aside from "Bossy" which managed to crack the Top 20 on Billboard's Hot 100). While she achieved a little more success in Europe, electro is where it's at these days - especially if you've got David Guetta guiding you along the path. After topping the Billboard Dance Club charts with "Acapella," it looks like she made the right call! While I would love to see the single do well in other U.S. radio formats, I'm not certain it will. it'll do really well overseas but I'm still holding out hope for U.S. success. We are in the era of Lady Gaga so anything is possible.

Hot Song Alert: Christina Aguilera - 'Not Myself Tonight'

Well folks. It's here. The debut of the new Christina Aguilera single "Not Myself Tonight"...IN FULL. The verdict? DEFINITELY worth the wait! This song is HOT. I like it because it's CURRENT (God, I feel like that word is so cliche b/c of American Idol), up-tempo and sexy. Considering her last album was a throwback to jazz and old school R&B, a proper club hit was overdue. I also must say that while the song showcases Aguilera's vocals very well, there aren't any crazy, unnecessary riffs (i.e. - "Ain't No Other Man"). Christina's just doin' her thing, backed by slick production and sassy songwriting. We all know the girl can sing. It's definitely smart to make the first single up-tempo and radio friendly. Well done Sony! Written by Ester Dean and produced by Polow Da Don, this single hopefully gives us a little taste of what we can expect from Bionic, due out in the U.S. on June 8th.

Remember "Not Myself Tonight" impacts radio on April 5th and is available to download on April 13th Check out the song above and let me know what you think!

Also check out the brand, spankin' new promo photos courtesy of ChristinaAguilera.com. Hot, right? Oh - and go check out The Prophet Blog for some cool hidden treasures he discovered hiding in the Bionic album artwork. Pretty cool if you ask me!

V.V. Brown @ Great Scott : A Little Tease

V.V. Brown
As you know, last night was the V.V. Brown/Little Dragon concert in Allston, MA at Great Scott. Overall it was a great show, although I have to admit that I snuck out before the end of the Little Dragon's set.

To be honest, the only reason I was there was to see V.V. Brown. I had never heard of Little Dragon prior to seeing that Brown was supporting them. Having just seen V.V. Brown headline her own small club tour, I was anxious to see her again - whether or not she was the main act. My good friend who came with me to the show (as well as her last show) noticed that her energy was down from the last time. Perhaps the touring is taking it's toll? She did recently perform at SXSW AND has been on the road since. I can't imagine the physical and mental stress associated with traveling back and forth across the world. According to a recent Tweet, Brown is a bit homesick? Whatever - I'm not saying that she didn't perform well. She put on a classy show and sounded great all throughout. It's just a little obvious that the energy was down from the last time. I'm beyond thrilled that I've had the chance to see her twice now here in the States.

At any rate, I'll put up a proper post in the next few days about the gig. I managed to snap some pretty decent pictures of Brown both with my phone and with my camera, so stay tuned for those! Be sure and buy her album - out digitally on iTunes and in shops April 20th. Also, look out for V.V. Brown's song "Bottles" on the soundtrack to the new Jennifer Lopez movie, The Back-up Plan, in theaters April 23rd.

Katie Melua Unleashes "The Flood" this Spring

I've been a Katie Melua fan forever. Getting to see her last Spring in Cambridge, MA. was SUCH a treat. She's super talented and beautiful to boot. When I started to hear mutterings that the also brilliant William Orbit was working with Melua on her record, I just about died. Why? He's the man behind Madonna's EVER-BRILLIANT Ray Of Light album. Orbit's also known for his work with such talented artists as Beth Orton, Olive, Blur and Peter Gabriel, just to name a few. From remixes to original productions, William Orbit is a master at his craft. The very idea of putting the Orbit touch on a Katie Melua record is beyond brilliant to me.

Way back when Melua's label let fans send in questions for Melua to answer and one of mine was selected. I asked the artist if she would ever consider contributing vocals to a electronica/dance track. Melua answered, "Yes" if it was the right fit for her. I brushed it off and forgot about it. Then, I heard "The Flood" - Melua's first single off of her upcoming fourth album. No, "The Flood" is not a straight up dance song but IS a departure from her previous efforts - and a brilliant departure at that. The song really excels preserving all of the qualities that make Melua's voice so captivating.
Katie Melua & William Orbit in the studio
Not dramatically different from some of her previous singles, "The Flood" starts out as any other Melua song might...with a beautiful orchestra leading into Melua's first verse. Melua starts in with the first few verses, singing along at a slower, more laid-back tempo. THEN at the 2:10 mark, the song takes a dramatic turn into the unexpected. The tempo dramatically shifts into an up-tempo dance number. Of course, things slow down right before the track ends but WOW. That minute and a half of dance music was what I had been waiting for since I first heard Melua's voice. It worth the wait. After listening to the song on the Music Fascination blog (ripped from it's BBC Radio 2 radio premiere on the Ken Bruce show) several times, I took to Twitter to let everyone know just how fabulous it was.
@Fool_4_Jamie Can't stop listening to the Katie Melua/@WilliamOrbit track The Flood. A beautiful departure from her older stuff...but still the same vibe.
@WilliamOrbit @Fool_4_Music wait till you hear the album!
I think that's an endorsement if I've ever heard one. The new Katie Melua album is going to be a beautiful thing. Titled The House, the album features the songwriting talent of Melua herself as well as Lauren Christy (Christina Aguilera, Avril Lavigne - as The Matrix), Guy Chambers (Robbie Williams, Kylie Minogue) and Rick Nowels (Colbie Caillat, Dido). "The Flood" is due out on May 17th in the UK, followed by the album release on May 24th. The album is due out in the U.S. on August 3rd. Additionally, artwork for "The Flood" and The House is being worked on by UK artist John Gosler, according to a Tweet from Melua's longtime producer Mike Batt. Looks like this is all coming together! I, for one, can't wait!

Tracklisting for The House:

1. I’d Love To Kill You
2. The Flood
3. A Happy Place
4. A Moment Of Madness
5. Red Balloons
6. Tiny Alien
7. No Fear Of Heights

Off to see V.V. Brown (+ Little Dragon)

VV Brown
I'm SO SO SO excited! I'm getting ready to go see one of my FAVORITE artists right now - V.V. Brown at Great Scott in Allston, MA. This will actually be my second time seeing V.V. at Great Scott AND her second time in Boston. It's bound to be a little different this time around, as the last time V.V. was the headliner and THIS time she's opening for the Swedish electro pop group Little Dragon. I have to admit that I haven't much gotten into Little Dragon yet but I'm sure I will after tonight's show.  The real reason I'm going tonight is to see V.V. Brown. I'll do a proper post about tonight's gig either later tonight or sometime this week. I'll also update you on her last gig in Boston!  Cheers for now! Follow my Tweets from tonight's gig!

MIKA Kicks Ass

As soon as I heard MIKA's new song "Kick Ass" was produced by RedOne I had mixed feelings. RedOne is no doubt a VERY talented producer.  The problem is that everybody under the sun has worked with him. Over saturation!  MIKA is just such a unique talent, I'd hate for his new song to sound overly commercial.  That being said, the song really doesn't lose much of that originality.  Sure, the production sounds a bit...done...but it's really all about MIKA as a voice and as a performer and he sounds AMAZING as always.
MIKA

Kick Ass - Out April 16th

"Kick Ass" comes from the soundtrack to a new movie of the same name, out in theaters April 16th.  The movie's plot sees a quiet high school boy and avid comic book reader named Dave Lizewski (Aaron Johnson) try to become a superhero without any powers to speak of.  MIKA's music video is interspersed with scenes from the movie, which I have to say, looks quite entertaining.  "Kick Ass" is out in the UK on May 3rd but you can pre-order it on iTunes HERE.  The three track EP features, in addition to "Kick Ass" (MIKA vs. RedOne) MIKA's "I See You" and a live version of his previous single "Blame It On The Girls."  Good stuff here. I wish MIKA had more success on this side of the pond. He's really quite talented.

The Power Of Madonna (+ Glee)

Glee Cast - The Power Of Madonna
I might be dying right now.  As soon as I saw this artwork I just about flipped.  I'm a huge fan of Glee (of course) so naturally, when I heard that Madonna gave the go-ahead for the Glee cast to interpret some of her music for the show, I was BEYOND ecstatic.  THEN - a couple of weeks ago a little glee promo made an appearance during American Idol.  The promo spot starts with Rachel (Lea Michelle) singing "Like A Prayer" before showing various scenes from the end of the first season. AHHH! Dying.

Looks like this little 7-track EP will be released both digitally and in CD-format on Tuesday April 20th, the same day the Madonna episode airs. I'm beyond excited about this whole thing! Not quite sure who's singing what so if anyone knows, please shoot me an email!  Check out the track listing below and let me know what you think!  Don't forget to watch Glee when it returns on Fox Tuesday April 13th after American Idol.

1. Express Yourself
2. Borderline/Open Your Heart
3. Vogue
4. Like A Virgin
5. 4 Minutes
6. What It Feels Like For A Girl
7. Like A Prayer

Artists You Should Know: Reni Lane and Matthew P

With so much to catch up on, I'm having a hard time choosing what to blog about right now. I missed a lot of GOOD music during my hiatus including a shit-ton of up and coming artists that deserve a shot based on sheer talent alone.  Here's are a couple of those artists to watch out for.

Reni Lane
Reni Lane -  New Album/Free Remixes - Reni Lane is a super talented classically-trained singer/songwriter from Oregon, raised in Virginia who now lives in New York City. Her album Ready was just released on Custard/Universal/Motown Records and features a blend of pop and rock beats all brought together by Lane's lovely vocals.  Reni Lane's voice and musical style is PERFECTLY suited to remixers, who already have hopped on the bandwagon.  "Place For Us" is the first single released from the album and you can even download 4 free remixes by RAC, Monsieu Adi, Will Eastman and Glitter&Blitz + 1 remix of "Runaway Train" also by Glitter&Blitz. That's quite the package deal! Download her album on iTunes OR 7Digital (for $5.00). She's on tour now so check her out if you get the chance. Check out a video mix here using the Glitter&Blitz remix of "Place For Us." Hot.

Check out Reni Lane on the Web:

Matthew P
Matthew P - Keep On Swimming - UK Singer/Songwriter Matthew P is as talented as he is good looking.  His voice calls to mind a little bit of James Morrison mixed with Daniel Merriweather and a dash of Calvin Harris (the voice...not the music).  His EP, Swimming was released on January 25th and features 5 lovely stripped down, soulful tracks.  While you can't find this EP in the U.S. right now, hopefully that will change.  For now, go listen to these five 30 second clips. You won't be disappointed! If you like what you hear you can even download a free track on his Facebook or MySpace pages, called "Keep On Swimming." It's a cute track sung beautifully by Matthew P. Matthew is going on tour in April throughout the UK so make sure and check him out! Watch the video for "End Of The World" HERE.

Christina Aguilera Isn't Herself Tonight

I've been excited about hearing new stuff from Christina Aguilera ever since I heard some of the big names she's collaborating with this time around - Sia, Tricky Stewart, Le Tigre, Polow Da Don, Ladytron, Diplo, Linda Perry, etc.  That's quite an impressive list of, by and large, more electronically-influenced artists.  What kind of sound is Ms. Aguilera going for this time around?  I for one can't wait.
Sony/BMG started the hype early last week, teasing us music lovers with little clues posted on her website. A new countdown every day leading to a daily "unveiling."  It started with the title of her new single, "Not Myself Tonight," as well as the single sleeve artwork.  Next up we were able to see the song lyrics.  Next...a press release about the single and forthcoming album.  Then at the end of last week, an 18 second clip of the first single premiered.  I like what I hear so far, and turns out we don't have to wait too much longer for more of a taste.  The Polow Da Don-produced "Not Myself Tonight" is going to premiere in full on March 30th on Christina's website.  The single will impact radio on April 5th and will be available to download on April 13th.  The album, called Bionic, is due for release on June 8th. PHEW! Whirlwind!

Bionic is going to be Aguilera's first album in 4 years (since the 2006 throwback pop 2-disc Back To Basics) so it makes sense that Sony is pulling out all of the stops this time around.  This is a big deal! Christina Aguilera is one of the most recognized names and faces in pop music today.  Says Aguilera about Bionic:
"The artists I chose to work with added so many unique sonic layers to Bionic. My intention was to step into their world and what they do combined with my own vision and sound. The results were magic."
I appreciate that Aguilera can step back from her own style of music and appreciate different genres. It's probably very easy to pigeonhole yourself into one distinct style, but artists like Madonna have proven that the only way to stay on top is to evolve.  The fact that she helped handpick every collaborator on Bionic is a true testament to her artistry and appreciation for music.  According to Aguilera, the sound heard on Bionic is going to be unexpected:
“I was able to explore and create a fresh, sexy feel using both electronic and organic elements with subject matter ranging from playful to introspective.  I am so excited for my fans to hear the new sound.”

I choose to be an optimist here. I'm really excited about Aguilera's new sound and style.  As for the album artwork...I very much like it. More so than the single artwork for "Not Myself Tonight." To be fair, when "Not Myself Tonight"'s artwork was first unveiled, I did like it. But when I saw that it had nothing to do with the Bionic album artwork, I became discouraged. I prefer a certain amount of continuity in an album artwork campaign. Oh well. Not a big deal. The music likely more than make up for it.

New Look, New Blog Post

Hello friends! It's been far too long. You'll notice a couple of differences on my blog. Well...probably one and that's the layout. I am loving Blogger's new layout design tools. I thought it was time for a change so I just went ahead and changed things over. Still has the same look overall but I'm using a new template.

I thought I would EASE my way back into blogging with a "back to basics" approach - the all too simple "Album Artwork Update." Yeah, I know it doesn't take too long to upload a bunch of pictures but hey - give me a break! I need to take it slow here.

So without further ado...

Oh...Side Note: Some of this information might seem a bit out of date. This is likely because I started the post a couple of weeks ago and never finished it. Forgive me.

Lady Gaga and Beyonce TelephoneI don't really think this song needs any introduction. Written by Lady Gaga, Rodney Jerkins, LaShawn Daniels, Lazonate Franklin and Beyoncé "Telephone" had one of the most anticipated video premieres ever...and for good reason. It's a masterpiece! If you haven't checked it out yet, what are you waiting for? Check it out HERE. I love the single sleeve here. It mirrors the whole Kill Bill influence seen throughout the video in terms of the fonts and still photos. Download the remix EP on iTunes HERE. You can also pick up the video HERE.

Allison Iraheta Scars"Scars" is the second single from American Idol's third runner up Allison Iraheta last season and it's a ballad. Debut single "Friday I'll Be Over U" was cute, uptempo and fun but didn't really showcase Iraheta's chops. "Scars" should do that and then some.

Alicia Keys and Beyonce Put It In A Love Song
Alicia Keys Un-Thinkable (I'm Ready)"Put It In A Love Song" served as Alicia Keys' official 3rd single in the U.S. ("Try Sleeping With A Broken Heart" will serve as her third UK single, due out May 24th) and was released in January. "Un-Thinkable (I'm Ready)" will be her official 4th single and was released to radio on March 15th. It's really a shame that Love Song featuring Beyoncé didn't have more of an impact on radio as it's one of my favorites from The Element of Freedom. "Un-Thinkable (I'm Ready)" is a ballad featuring Drake produced by Noah "40" Shebib. It's got a really stripped down, raw feeling. Not as "fun" as it's predecessor but it really showcases Keys' vulnerability and talent.

Adam Lambert Whataya Want From Me"Whataya Want From Me" is Adam Lambert's second single from his debut album For Your Entertainment. After the crazy debacle that was his performance at the AMAs last year, Lambert and his label seemed anxious to move on. Lambert made a series of TV appearances performing the ballad. Written by P!nk, Max Martin and Johan Shellback, the track was originally intended for P!nk's Funhouse album, but never made the final cut. The song is growing on my considerably, thanks in part due to the remixes by Fonzerelli that have surfaced. Check out the video HERE and check out THIS stripped down Australian performance.

Hole Skinny Little BitchNow I've never been a fan of Hole OR Courtney Love for that matter, but I'm always up for a good comeback/trainwreck. To be honest, I was kind of excited about Courtney's long-in-the-works solo career that never materialized so it will be interesting to see how this goes. "Skinny Little Bitch" will serve as Hole's first single off of Hole's fourth album, Nobody's Daughter and fourteenth single overall. The song isn't something I would normally listen to but it's growing on me. After a 10 year hiatus, it's safe to say that this is one of the years most anticipated comebacks. Download it on iTunes HERE.

Estelle Freak"Freak" featuring Kardinal Offishall is the new David Guetta-produced single for UK R&B singer Estelle, who took the U.S. (and the world) by storm two years ago with her Top Ten single "American Boy,"featuring American rapper Kanye West. This time around she's pairing up with Canadian rapper/producer Kardinal Offishall on a decidedly LESS R&B/Hip-Hop sounding track. "Freak" is an electro JAM with Guetta's trademark beats all over it. Check out the cool video HERE. Download it on iTunes HERE.

Diana Vickers OnceDiana Mae Vickers is the latest pop star to come off of the UK talent show The X-Factor. Vickers competed in the 2008 series (Alexandra Burke, JLS), ultimately being signed with RCA Records. "Once" is the debut single (April 19th) from her forthcoming album Songs from the Tainted Cherry Tree, due to be released May 3rd. After X-Factor, Vickers went on to star in her first West End show, The Rise and Fall of Little Voice, showcasing her talent on the stage. Nerina Pallot, Ellie Goulding, Starsmith, Alexis Strum, Patrick Wolf, and Guy Sigsworth are just some of the big names Vickers' collaborated with while making this album. "Once" is a beautiful song (with a beautiful video) and I think she has lots of potential to become another X-Factor success story.

Cascada Pyromania"Pyromania" is a new single from Cascada, and while it's not part of the Evacuate The Dancefloor album, it's got a very similar sound. According to lead singer Natalie Horler, Cascada is working on a new album so in all likelihood "Pyromania" will make an appearance. I like the cheesiness of the song. While I don't think the track will have much influence on mainstream radio here in the U.S., I think that this song has the same potential to do well in the clubs. I'll always be a closet Cascada fan. They are SUCH a guilty pleasure! Check out the new video HERE.

Paloma Faith Upside Down"Upside Down" is Paloma Faith's 4th UK single, released on March 15th. I am a HUGE fan when an artist's artwork all follows a theme and so far Faith's has been consistently top notch. Colorful costumes, crazy hair and makeup...I love it! The song is also one of my favorites from Do You Want The Truth or Something Beautiful? It's got a great old fashioned jazzy feel to it. The video is also fantastic, as are the club remixes from Cahill. This is one artists who I would die to se live here in the U.S. I think we're ready for a Paloma Faith invasion.

Kimberly Wyatt Not Just A DollPoor Pussycat Dolls. They keep losing members left and right! With all of the girls now working on solo projects, Robin Antin and Nicole Scherzinger both are saying that some "new faces" will be coming on board. Sounds like a reinvention. I honestly can't say that losing Carmit Bachar was all that devastating to the group's success but losing EVERYONE except for the lead singer? That could be potentially very jarring. I mean, who are we kidding...it's always been Nicole Scherzinger front and center with her back up dancers and I can't foresee that changing so who really cares who's in the group, right? As long as the songs are hot, that's all that really matters? At any rate - Kimberly Wyatt has released a new promo single called "Not Just A Doll" in which she claims to be a "dreamer" and that she's "not just a doll." Nothing spectacular, but feel free to check it out on iTunes. The real solo album I'm looking forward to from this crew is Melody Thornton, though it would be interesting to hear what Jessica Sutta comes up with. I quite liked her in German DJ/Remixer Paul Van Dyk's "White Lies."

Taio Cruz and Ludacris Break Your Heart
Taio Cruz is another fantastic British artists that I've been familiar with for quite some time, who's starting to get popular here in the States. His single "Break Your Heart" was released in America at the end of February and went all the way to the top of Billboard's Hot 100 chart. Pretty impressive for a first single! I'm guessing that the re-jiggered American version featuring Rapper Ludacris didn't hurt. U.S. radio stations do tend to prefer it's pop music with R&B/Hip-Hop influences, so Taio Cruz's blend of the two musical genres should do him very well here in states, and I couldn't be more thrilled. I've already turned several friends onto his beats. America - get used to Taio Cruz. He's gonna be huge. Now...if only the video for his next UK single would finally premiere. Cruz is releasing "Dirty Picture" featuring the ever popular Ke$ha on April 26th. It will serve as the official third UK single. If the U.S. label were smart, they'd release it as his second U.S. single. Ke$ha is sort riding high at the moment.
