You can't help but smile when you listen to Indie Folk duo She & Him. Maybe it's the summery, carefree style of of the music, maybe it's singer/actress Zooey Deschanel and her infectious, addictively sweet personality or maybe it's just M. Ward and all of his hipster sex appeal. Whatever it is, I love this duo and their new Jeremy Konner-directed video for "Don't Look Back" is an absolute treasure. Lifted off their second studio album, Volume 2 (P-Vine/Merge/Double Six Records), "Don't Look Back" is indie-pop at it's finest and the video is a classy affair. Starting out like a TV commercial from the 1950s, the video features Deschanel and Ward are showing off "modern" amenities such as a telephone, a TV and even a new dance style. The theme of the video becomes clear when the duo introduce us to the "music of tomorrow." While I'm not sure She & Him represents the music of the future by any stretch of the imagination, "Don't Look Back" is a fun, retro-romp and Deschanel is a pleasure to watch.
She & Him's album Volume 2 made an impressive #6 debut on the Billboard 200 chart when the album was released last March. Produced by Ward, the album has spawned 3 previous singles, most recently "I Put A Spell On You" and "Thieves" before that. None of the singles released have charted here in the States but first single, "In The Sun" did manage to chart in France at the #89 spot. Good stuff. Check out the super fun clip below.
